How to find the right DJ for your event

A good DJ does more than play songs: they read the room, build the night and keep the dance floor full. Here's what you need to know before you book.

What makes a good DJ?

A good DJ adapts the music to the crowd instead of sticking to a fixed playlist - relaxed during drinks and dinner, then building up towards the dance floor. At weddings and company parties many DJs also take the mic: introducing speakers, leading into the first dance or getting a game going. Listen to the mixes on their profiles and you'll hear their style before you book.

Which DJ suits which event?

The same DJ rarely plays a wedding the way they play a club night. Look for experience of your kind of event:

  • Weddings - music for all ages and a firm grip on the evening's schedule. See wedding DJs.
  • Company parties and julbord - a DJ who can read a room of colleagues who don't know each other. Read booking a DJ for a corporate event.
  • Birthdays and 50th parties - hits from the birthday person's youth mixed with new music.
  • Bars, restaurants and clubs - regular nights where the music keeps guests from leaving. See live music at restaurants.
  • Graduation and school parties - the latest hits and lots of energy.

Equipment: what's included?

Most DJs bring decks and speakers that are enough for a normal party, and many also have lights and a microphone. A bigger venue may need more sound, so include the number of guests and the size of the venue in your request. More on sound in the guide hiring speakers for a party.

Checklist for your request

The more the DJ knows, the better the suggestions and price you'll get:

DJs in your city

Search for your city above and the DJs closest to your event are shown first. Most DJs are based in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, but many are happy to travel to parties anywhere in Sweden.

How it works

From search to booking in four steps

Search and compare

Filter by type of artist and city. You only see verified artists, closest to you first – listen to their music and read their profiles right on the page.

Send a request

Tick one or more artists and send the same request to all of them at once. Tell them about your event, date and budget – it takes less than two minutes.

Choose and book

You get replies with price and availability from each artist. Compare them at your own pace and book the one you like.

Pay securely

You pay before the gig and Jocky holds the money until the performance has taken place – only then does the artist get paid.

Most people hear back within a few hours.

How much does it cost to hire a DJ?

It depends on the DJ, the length of the set and the type of event. A professional DJ usually costs SEK 6,000–15,000 per night, while well-known names can charge more. Newer DJs building their careers often charge from SEK 4,000 - great for smaller parties. The price in the reply is what you pay – Jocky doesn't add a booking fee.

How long does a DJ play for?

A typical party is four to five hours, often from after dinner until the end of the night. At weddings many DJs also play during drinks and dinner. Put the times in your request and you'll get a price for exactly that set length.

Does the DJ bring their own equipment?

Usually, yes - decks and speakers for a normal party. Lights, a microphone and extra sound for larger venues vary between DJs, so say what you need in your request.

Can the DJ play song requests?

Yes. Feel free to send song requests and songs you don't want to hear. Most DJs also take requests from guests during the night.

How far in advance should I book a DJ?

For weddings and weekends in May, June and December: ideally three to six months ahead. Other dates can often be booked a few weeks in advance.

Does it cost anything to send a booking request?

No. Searching, listening and sending requests is completely free, with no obligation. You only pay once you've chosen an artist and confirmed the booking.

How quickly will I get a reply?

Most artists reply within a few hours and almost all within 24 hours. If you send your request to several at once, you see all the replies in one place and can compare price, availability and format straight away.

What kinds of artists can I book?

As well as DJs, you can book live bands, troubadours, saxophonists, quiz hosts and stand-up comedians. They're all booked the same way – search, send a request, compare and choose.

What does 'verified artist' mean?

It means we've checked their identity and contact details and that the artist can invoice – through their own company or through Jocky. Verified artists have also accepted our terms on cancellations and delivery, so you know where you stand before you book.

Can I book artists anywhere in Sweden?

Yes. Jocky has artists all over the country, with the widest selection in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Many are happy to travel – just say where the event is and the artist will include any travel in their reply.

I can't find the artist I'm looking for – can you help?

Yes. We book far more artists than the ones shown on the site. Tell us who or what kind of artist you're after, and we'll tap into our network and get back to you with suggestions – usually the same day. Contact us and we'll sort it out.

What happens if the artist falls ill?

If the artist falls ill or can't make it, we'll help you find a replacement at short notice – often the same day. You never pay for a gig that doesn't happen.
