How much does a DJ cost? Prices and what affects them

Short answer

A professional DJ usually costs SEK 6,000–15,000 per night in Sweden. Where you land in that range depends mainly on playing time, the date, whether sound and lighting are included and how far the DJ needs to travel.

The DJ is often the booking that does most to set the mood, whether it's a wedding, a company party or a Friday night at the bar. Yet prices are hard to get a handle on, because every DJ sets their own fee and packages their services differently. In this guide we go through what a DJ usually costs, what pushes the price up or down and how to compare quotes, so you know exactly what you're paying for.

How much does a DJ cost in Sweden?

A professional DJ usually costs between SEK 6,000 and 15,000 for a night. That range covers a typical gig of four to five hours, such as a company party, a birthday or a weekend night at a restaurant or bar. The amount is the DJ's fee, in other words what they charge for the job, and it may or may not include equipment.

The lower end of the range is common for shorter sets, weeknights and jobs where the venue already has a sound system that works. The upper end is common for weddings, larger corporate events and peak-season weekends, when the DJ also brings their own sound and lighting and spends time planning the music in advance. Jobs that run across a whole day, such as a wedding with a drinks reception, dinner and dancing, are often priced separately.

What affects the price of a DJ?

Five things explain almost every difference between two quotes. The table shows which way each factor usually pulls.

Playing timeTwo to three hoursThe whole night or several sets

Playing time and number of sets

Playing time is the single biggest factor. A DJ playing two hours at after-work drinks has a completely different job from one who takes the crowd from dinner to closing time. Remember to allow time for carrying in, setting up and testing the sound, which often takes an hour before the first song.

Date and season

Fridays and Saturdays are in highest demand, and during wedding season and the Christmas party season in December many DJs are fully booked well in advance. If you can be flexible with the date, or book a Thursday, you'll often have more DJs to choose from and more room to negotiate.

Sound and lighting

Restaurants, bars and hotels often have their own sound system that the DJ plugs into. At a private party or in a hired venue, the DJ usually needs to bring speakers, a mixer and lighting, and that costs more. Always check what the venue has before you decide, so you don't pay twice. Travel and logistics

A DJ who lives near the event has lower costs than one who has to travel, and over long distances travel and sometimes a hotel are added on. That's especially true if you want to book a particular DJ from another city. On Jocky, DJs are sorted by distance, for example DJs in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, so you see the closest ones first.

Experience and genre

A DJ with years of experience at weddings or large corporate events knows how to read a room and handle speeches, ceremonies and schedules. That peace of mind often costs a little more, but it's worth a lot when the evening has plenty of moving parts.

What's included when you hire a DJ?

There's no standard, so the most important thing is that the quote says exactly what's included. Most jobs cover the gig itself, preparing the music and being in touch with you before the event. Common extras are sound and lighting, a wireless microphone for speeches, extra hours and music for the ceremony or drinks reception. Also ask what happens if the night runs late, as overtime is often charged per hour or part of an hour.

How to compare quotes from DJs

Two quotes with different totals can turn out to cost exactly the same once you've done the maths, because they often include different things. Put them side by side and compare playing time, equipment, travel and what happens with overtime. Ask for a mix or a clip from a previous gig, so you can hear whether the music suits your crowd. Finally, check how payment works. When you book through Jocky, the agreement and invoicing are handled in the platform, so you get the right paperwork without having to chase it afterwards.

Checklist before you book a DJ

  • The date, time and exact playing time are fixed.
  • You know whether the venue has its own sound system and when the DJ can load in.
  • You've described the crowd, the atmosphere and what music should and shouldn't be played.
  • The quote states playing time, equipment, travel and the overtime rate.
  • It's clear how and when payment is made.

Frequently asked questions about hiring a DJ

How much does it cost to hire a DJ?

Hiring a professional DJ for a night in Sweden usually costs SEK 6,000–15,000. The price comes in lower for shorter sets, weeknights and venues with their own sound system, and higher for weekends in peak season, weddings and when the DJ brings sound and lighting. Always ask for a quote that states playing time, equipment and travel, so you're comparing like with like.

How far in advance should you book a wedding DJ?

Book your wedding DJ as soon as the date and venue are confirmed, ideally several months ahead. Summer Saturdays and the Christmas party season in December are the first dates to go, because many DJs are already booked up. For an ordinary party or a night at a bar, a few weeks is usually enough.

Are sound and lighting included when you book a DJ?

Sometimes, but not always, so it needs to be in the quote. Many DJs can bring a complete package for an extra fee, while restaurants and bars often have their own sound system that the DJ plugs into. Also ask whether a microphone for speeches is included, as it's easy to forget.

Can I choose the style of music?

Yes, and it's one of the most important things to share when you book. Describe the crowd, the atmosphere you want and ideally a few songs or artists that should be played, and some that definitely shouldn't. On Jocky you write this straight into your request, so you're matched with DJs who play that music.

How quickly will I hear back when I book a DJ through Jocky?

When you send a request through Jocky, it goes to available DJs who suit your date and style of music, and the aim is for you to receive quotes the same day. You compare them at your own pace and confirm the one you want. The agreement and invoicing are then handled in the platform.
