Book a troubadour

How to find the right troubadour for your event

A troubadour is often the easiest way to bring a party to life: one person, a guitar or piano and a room that sings along. Here's what you need to know before you book.

What does a troubadour do?

A troubadour sings and accompanies themselves, usually on acoustic guitar and sometimes on piano. The repertoire is broad: Swedish classics, pop and rock from several decades and the songs everyone knows the chorus to. What sets a good troubadour apart from a good singer is the ability to read the room - playing softly when guests want to talk and getting the singalong going when the mood is right.

When is a troubadour a good fit?

A troubadour takes up little space, needs little equipment and works both as background music and as the main act of the night. Typical occasions:

  • Birthdays and 50th parties - singalongs with songs from the birthday person's youth.
  • After-work drinks and pub nights - read more about after-work drinks with a troubadour.
  • Weddings - relaxed during drinks and dinner, singalongs after the speeches. See also wedding music.
  • Julbord and company parties - a troubadour who gets colleagues singing along.
  • Restaurants and bars - regular live music that keeps guests around for longer. Read about live music at restaurants.

Troubadour, duo or band?

A solo artist goes a long way at a dinner or a smaller party, and suits when the music should carry the mood without taking over. A duo gives you more vocals and harmonies, and a live band is the choice when you want a packed dance floor and a real party. If there'll be dancing late into the night, a DJ is a good complement - many book a troubadour for dinner and a DJ when the dance floor opens.

What to include in your request

The more the troubadour knows, the better the suggestions you'll get. It helps to include:

  • Date, start and finish time and how many sets you'd like.
  • Type of event, roughly how many guests and where it is.
  • Whether there's sound at the venue or the troubadour needs to bring their own.
  • Song requests and the kind of singalong your guests enjoy.
  • Your budget, so the suggestions match it.

Search and compare

Filter by type of artist and city. You only see verified artists, closest to you first – listen to their music and read their profiles right on the page.

Send a request

Tick one or more artists and send the same request to all of them at once. Tell them about your event, date and budget – it takes less than two minutes.

Choose and book

You get replies with price and availability from each artist. Compare them at your own pace and book the one you like.

Pay securely

You pay before the gig and Jocky holds the money until the performance has taken place – only then does the artist get paid.

How much does it cost to book a troubadour?

A troubadour usually costs SEK 6,000–15,000 per night, depending on set length, date and travel. Newer troubadours often charge from SEK 4,000, and a duo or full band costs more. Read more in the guide how much a troubadour costs. You always get a firm price from the artist before you decide, with no booking fee from Jocky.

How long does a troubadour play for?

Expect three to four hours, usually in two or three sets with breaks in between. For after-work drinks one or two sets is often enough. Put your times in the request and you'll get a price for exactly that set length.

Does the troubadour bring their own sound?

It varies between troubadours. Pubs and restaurants often have a microphone and speakers to plug into, but for a private party the troubadour usually needs to bring their own. Say in your request whether there's sound at the venue, so the artist brings the right equipment.

Can the troubadour play song requests and singalongs?

Yes, singalongs and song requests are what troubadours do best. Add a few songs your guests love to the message when you send your request. If a song needs to be learnt specially, it may cost a little extra.

Troubadour or DJ - which is best?

A troubadour suits when guests want to sing along and feel close to the music, for example during dinner, at after-work drinks or a birthday. If there'll be dancing for hours, a DJ is often the better choice. Many combine the two: a troubadour during dinner and a DJ when the dance floor opens.

How far in advance should I book a troubadour?

Fridays, Saturdays, December and the summer wedding weekends get booked up first, so once your date is set it pays to send your request straight away. Short notice often works too, since you can send the same request to several troubadours at once.

Does it cost anything to send a booking request?

No. Searching, listening and sending requests is completely free, with no obligation. You only pay once you've chosen an artist and confirmed the booking.

How quickly will I get a reply?

Most artists reply within a few hours and almost all within 24 hours. If you send your request to several at once, you see all the replies in one place and can compare price, availability and format straight away.

What kinds of artists can I book?

As well as DJs, you can book live bands, troubadours, saxophonists, quiz hosts and stand-up comedians. They're all booked the same way – search, send a request, compare and choose.

What does 'verified artist' mean?

It means we've checked their identity and contact details and that the artist can invoice – through their own company or through Jocky. Verified artists have also accepted our terms on cancellations and delivery, so you know where you stand before you book.

Can I book artists anywhere in Sweden?

Yes. Jocky has artists all over the country, with the widest selection in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Many are happy to travel – just say where the event is and the artist will include any travel in their reply.

I can't find the artist I'm looking for – can you help?

Yes. We book far more artists than the ones shown on the site. Tell us who or what kind of artist you're after, and we'll tap into our network and get back to you with suggestions – usually the same day. Contact us and we'll sort it out.

What happens if the artist falls ill?

If the artist falls ill or can't make it, we'll help you find a replacement at short notice – often the same day. You never pay for a gig that doesn't happen.
